Cam Crazy - If the levers didn't make you mad, this will at least make you crazy.
Cams are widely used in motors and children's toys. This course teaches the student how to make and apply the use of cams and linkages to a small mechanism, so as a handle is turned the axle turns a camshaft and neat things happen. This is a great problem- solving activity where advanced students can design some really neat automatons - great for science fairs! We start by looking at how simple devices create movement from one direction to another, and then dive into a big project. Each student will bring home a completed cam-assisted mechanism (automaton).
Your children would be hard pressed to have so much fun exploring science (see above courses). Many rocket scientists got their start in courses like this, so if the space station looks like fun

Who is Derek Wulff Anyway?
I am a BC certified teacher who has been teaching grades K to 6 for the past 13 years. I have taught a wide variety of subjects, but find myself most drawn to science and art. I have been a lifelong artist and athlete, father and coach, gardener, author and environmentalist, and have set up a studio/classroom at my home to teach and practice my crafts. I have been doing ceramics for 12 years, teaching art in my classes and loving the rich learning experiences of hands-on science.
I love teaching and want to share my enthusiasm with children who want to learn new things and make sense of their world around them (to the extent that any of us can!).
My courses are practical, and hands-on. Students make and test their creations, and get to take them home. I make sure they make the link between what they are doing and how it applies in the grownup world.
The courses I teach are fun and challenging, with an individual approach, the way learning should be! All classes are taught at the Juan de Fuca Rec Center in Colwood.
