This course challenges the students to design and build a moveable bridge. There are several types students can make, a swing bridge, bascule bridge, lift bridge and drawbridge. They can be made to work in a variety of ways, by using hydraulics or pulleys and gears, as well as weighted cantilevers. The class starts off by looking at the types of bridges, and examples of them from around the world, and then the ways in which bridges move. Students are then asked to design and build (in groups) one of the moveable bridges they have seen. They will then draw, cut and build, from scratch using levers, gears or hydraulics, a bridge.
